We put 14 crib mattresses through four checks. Three passed. One costs $299.
A baby spends up to 16 hours a day on this one surface. So we skipped the marketing and checked what each mattress is actually made of, with four checks any parent can repeat.
How we did this: every construction was verified against the maker's own specification pages and the law tag required on every mattress sold in the US. We describe each mattress by construction and price, not brand name.
Short on time? Skip to the three that passed ↓Almost every parent shopping for a crib mattress walks the same path:
We followed that path to the end: 14 mattresses, from the $70 foam block to the $569 flagship, put through four checks in order.
The field of 14
Described by construction and price, not brand. Watch this grid as you read on.
Is the core made of petroleum or plastic?
Start in the middle of the mattress. The under-$150 tier is polyurethane foam, a petroleum product; "plant-based" versions blend in some soy oil. Why that matters has now been measured.
University of Toronto researchers warmed and weighted 16 new foam-core children's mattresses to simulate a sleeping child. Every one emitted chemicals of concern, and emissions rose several times under body heat.
Those chemicals are there to make synthetic foam soft, and legal to sell under flammability rules. Wool passes the same rules by itself. Remove the plastic and they have no reason to be there.
The $200-300 washable lattice mattresses are open about it: the maker describes the core as the same food-grade plastic used for yogurt containers. It is still an all-plastic sleep surface.
No mattress prevents SIDS, and pediatricians say there isn't enough data that a "breathable" mattress lowers risk. What regulators test is firmness (16 CFR 1241). Airflow is a comfort benefit, and coconut fiber and wool provide it without plastic.
Is it organic inside, or just on the outside?
Nine left. Several of the best-known "organic" crib mattresses pair organic cotton on the surface with engineered plastics underneath. US law makes every mattress list its filling. Here is the tag from one popular "organic" crib mattress, figures unchanged:
"Plant-based" describes where the carbon came from, not what your baby sleeps on. In the lab, the plant halo hasn't held up:
These are lab cell tests, not proof of harm to any child. But organic cotton and wool don't need an asterisk. A filling that is 59% engineered polymer does.
Read the filling list on the law tag, not the cover copy. "PE foam," "PLA" and "TPU" are all plastics.
Does "organic" stop at the coils?
Six left, all certified organic. Three are built around a steel coil unit; three are springless natural material all the way through.
Coils are not a safety problem. This check is about consistency, because a coil unit is never just steel. The makers' own spec sheets say so:
- Polypropylene pockets. Each coil floats in a sleeve of non-woven plastic fabric.
- Polymer adhesives. One maker lists the coil-assembly glue by chemical registry number: waxes, resin, and EVA polymer.
- A waterproof barrier, on some models, laminated into the build.
You chose organic to control what's inside the mattress. Is "organic materials wrapped around steel, plastic fabric and polymer glue" what you meant?
Hold that line and three more fall away. What's left: three of the 14, made only of latex, coconut fiber, wool and cotton.
Three survived every check. Here they are, side by side.
Two you'd expect: the $569 flagship handmade in Los Angeles and a $425 workshop build handmade in Canada. The third is the one almost nobody walks into this market knowing: KATU, a specialist baby sleep brand selling the same springless, all-natural construction for $299.

Where the ones we eliminated win: weight. A plastic-core mattress weighs about 14 lb. Solid latex and coconut fiber weigh 23 to 28 lb, and you will feel it at every sheet change. If you are recovering from a C-section or lifting alone, that is a fair reason to choose differently. Layering a spare sheet over the protector cuts how often you lift it.
What exactly is a KATU mattress?
Four layers, each a certified organic natural material, bonded with natural latex rather than adhesives. Flip it as your child grows: a firmer coconut-fiber side for the infant year, a softer latex side for the toddler years.

Does the price survive a sanity check?
Here is the market for a springless, fully natural, certified organic crib mattress, in one picture:
How? Structure, not corners. The premium brands build in North America with imported organic materials and fund large adult-mattress businesses. KATU builds at the certified source and sells one product line, direct.
Price up a full setup - mattress, waterproof protector, fitted sheets, blankets - and the two best-known organic brands land at roughly $500 to $750+. The complete KATU sleep bundle is $398.
Don't take one publication's word for it
A $299 price usually means an unknown quantity. This one carries marks you can check:

Questions parents ask us
Yes. The KATU infant side is coconut fiber, one of the firmest natural sleep surfaces there is, and the mattress meets US federal crib mattress safety requirements. Always follow safe-sleep practice: baby on their back, firm flat surface, empty crib.
By design there is no plastic waterproof layer inside the mattress. Protection comes from a separate washable protector that sits under the sheet, so the mess layer goes in the washing machine. It's how every springless natural brand on the shortlist handles it.
The latex is GOLS certified organic natural rubber, and it sits inside the mattress beneath the wool and cotton layers rather than against the skin. True latex allergy in infants is rare and mostly associated with repeated medical exposure. If your family has a confirmed latex allergy, speak to your pediatrician first.
Because there's more in it: about 23 lb, against roughly 14 lb for a foam or plastic-core mattress. Foam is mostly air and a coil unit is mostly a hollow cavity; a springless natural build is solid latex, coconut fiber, wool and cotton all the way through. The heft is the material you're paying for.
KATU launched in 2025 and spends on materials and certification rather than showrooms. Recognition is catching up fast: Forbes Vetted and the Good Housekeeping Institute both put it through testing this year and gave it their 2026 marks, and in September 2026 it earned UL GREENGUARD Gold certification.
