We put 14 crib mattresses through four checks. Three passed. One costs $299.
A baby spends up to 16 hours a day on this one surface. So we checked what each mattress is actually made of, using the makers' own spec pages and law tags.
Short on time? Skip to the three that passed ↓We took 14 crib mattresses, from the $70 foam block to the $569 flagship, and ran four checks in order.
The field of 14
Described by construction and price, not brand.
Is the core made of petroleum or plastic?
The under-$150 tier is polyurethane foam, a petroleum product. University of Toronto researchers warmed and weighted 16 new foam-core children's mattresses to simulate a sleeping child. What they measured:
The washable lattice and recycled-fiber cores ($100-300) are plastic too: one maker describes its core as the same food-grade plastic used for yogurt containers.
Is it organic inside, or just on the outside?
Several of the best-known "organic" crib mattresses put organic cotton over engineered plastic. Here is the law tag from one of them, figures unchanged:
Read the filling list on the law tag, not the cover copy. "PE foam," "PLA" and "TPU" are all plastics.
Does "organic" stop at the coils?
Six left, all certified organic. Three are built around steel coils. Coils are not a safety problem, but a coil unit is never just steel. From the makers' own spec sheets:
- Polypropylene pockets. A plastic fabric sleeve around each coil.
- Polymer adhesives. Waxes, resin and EVA polymer in the coil-assembly glue.
- A waterproof barrier, laminated into some models.
Hold that line and three more fall away.
Three survived every check. Here they are, side by side.
Two you'd expect: a $569 Los Angeles flagship and a $425 Canadian workshop build. The third is KATU: the same springless, all-natural construction for $299.

Where the ones we eliminated win: weight. A plastic-core mattress weighs about 14 lb. These weigh 23 to 28 lb, and you will feel it at every sheet change.
What exactly is a KATU mattress?
Four certified organic layers, bonded with natural latex rather than adhesives. Flip it as your child grows: a firmer coconut-fiber side for the infant year, a softer latex side for the toddler years.

Does the price survive a sanity check?
The market for a springless, certified organic crib mattress, in one picture:
How? Structure, not corners. The premium brands build in North America with imported materials. KATU builds at the certified source and sells one product line, direct.
Add a protector, sheets and blankets and the two best-known organic brands land at roughly $500 to $750+. The complete KATU sleep bundle is $398.

Questions parents ask us
Yes. The infant side is coconut fiber, one of the firmest natural sleep surfaces, and the mattress meets US federal crib mattress safety requirements.
There is no plastic layer inside the mattress. A washable protector sits under the sheet, so the mess goes in the washing machine.
No mattress prevents SIDS, and pediatricians say there isn't enough data that a "breathable" mattress lowers risk. What regulators test is firmness (16 CFR 1241).
